STANDARD

DEEP PIPELINE

Current general-purpose processors in the datacenter are based on a 50-year-old design approach based on the ISA (Instruction Set Architecture).  This approach that has run out of gas despite ever more exotic and expensive optimization attempts.

As can be seen in the video, only one stage of the long instruction pipeline can be executing (doing useful work) per cycle.  If there is a branch, the pipeline may have to be completely flushed (with a significant loss of performance) to follow the new program execution path.

Time to Think Outside the Box!
